Delilah used a chilling spell on her coffee, spiked with a stamina formation to help clear the fog from her mind as Glosil finished reading the message from Erik.

The full council had gathered to read it, with the exception of Blaze, who had provided a sealed letter, giving his support of the proposed plan.

“Thank you, Glosil. Elan, do we have an idea of what the Imperium head plans to do?” Delilah asked.

“He plans to increase the power of his forces by recruiting direct from the Mission Hall and Associations who have been fighting in the war. He was looking to reclaim the academy and fight from there. We took significant losses, and our forces are spread too thin across the realms to contain the Shattered. I hoped that we could slowly grind down the Shattered assault, corral our forces, and push through the Divine and Celestial realms meter by meter. Akran changes everything.”

“And what does Head Andross think about your plan to deal with Akran?”

“He doesn’t believe anyone can ascend, let alone a Shattered. No one else has achieved it since the Ten Realms were founded.”

“Three years ago, people would have said it was impossible for a First Realm empire to fight in the Seventh Realm,” Elise said.

“Just because it hasn’t happened in a long time, doesn’t mean that it won’t happen again,” Delilah agreed. She took a deep breath, warming her hands off her cup as she looked at the papers in front of her. She turned her gaze to Glosil. “Commander, what do you make of the plan?”

“A lightning raid into the Tenth Realm to kill a powerful enemy opponent before he can enter the battlefield isn’t without risks. We can only take around fifty percent of our forces into the Tenth Realm. We will be able to man and bring the entire fleet in support. They will be going into a dense group of Devourers and Ravagers, all sworn to Akran. His army, by itself, is a major threat. If we can shut down the tears in the area, we slow the forces pushing into the lower realms. They have been holding them open for weeks. Most tears remain open for a few hours or days, and the Devourers and sworn pass through to the ninth realm.” Glosil sighed. “It comes down to two things: do we think Akran will be a greater threat in the future or not? If he will, we need to do everything we can to kill him.”

“I need to say it, but we aren’t the protectors of the Ten Realms.” Elise leaned forward, raising her hand to forestall arguments. “We are the council of the Alvan Empire. It is not our job to defend all the realms. That said, if we don’t defeat the Shattered in the higher realms, then it will eventually reach us down here. We can’t turtle and hide in our dungeons anymore.”

“This Akran is a level five Devourer, a walking cataclysm.” Jia Feng’s eyes darted to Momma Rodriguez, who had remained stoic throughout the meeting.
